Diogenes of Sinope is the second work to explicitly reference the eponymous philosopher, and in particular an origin myth
of how he commenced on his uncompromising development of the school of Cynical thought.
As a young man Diogenes minted coins in the then Greek province of Sinope, following the path of his father. Accounts differ
as to the sequence of events, but supposedly Diogenes fled Sinope following the discovery of defaced coins in circulation.
Arriving in Athens he made his way to the Oracle at Delphi who, to his surprise, advised him to "deface the currency".
