Diogenes (1999)
36 35mm slide transparencies
Based on performance in New York

Diogenes is a series of 36 slides depicting the artist walking down Broadway and changing
from his suit into a bear suit and ‘staring out’ the Merrill-Lynch Bull, before changing again
and walking away around the block to complete a loop.

Diogenes of Sinope was a philosopher of the Cynic school and a figure about whom there
are numerous anecdotal accounts testifying to his mordant wit. One story has it that he
used to beg in front of statues, in order he claimed, to practice disappointment.
