Persuasion, 2009
Giclée prints (diptych), 44"x34" each
This ongoing series of prints is based in a trope in spam e-mails of messages containing fragments of (usually) out of copyright novels hosted online.
The novels are treated by the spammers as 'legitimate' text to be mined for coherent strings of words that will get a message past mail filters (which
might block more straightforward marketing messages alone). The resultant print diptychs show the entire text of the novel minus the fragments that
have shown up in a prepared inbox at the time of printing on the left hand sheet. These fragments are placed in the corresponding position on the right sheet.
The Demon of Electricity (details), 2005
Giclée prints (diptych), 44"x34" each
From a story called “The Master Key”, written by L. Frank Baum ( author of “The Wizard of Oz”). This 1901 story tells of the adventures of a boy called Rob
who had inadvertently summoned the eponymous Demon by crossing two electrical wires and who is granted a series of ever more powerful electrically powered
magical devices, including a flying machine, a proto stun gun, and what might be a web browser. His misadventures with these eventually convince him that
mankind is not wise enough to use these devices yet and he banishes the Demon. Many of the print works in this series are based on texts whose choice suggests
a certain ironic sense of humour on the part of the original spammer - Great Expectations, Persuasion, Captain Blood (a pirate tale later made into an Errol Flynn movie)
