Permanent installation for FACT, Liverpool
Vinyl on glass, 26m x 2m
This permanently installed work for the organization's new building sampled the user dictionaries (words 'added' or 'learnt' during routine
word processing spell checks)
from all FACT's current and obsolete computers since they came into existence
(the oldest computers
having software which did not recognise www or http
for example). They were compiled into a single composite dictionary which was then
deployed
over a 26m section of 13 window panels across the facade of the building - which had previously been designated as a functional
brise soleil.
The 13 glass panels, each 2m square, are just above
door height looking into the lobby of the building. The text is white vinyl
on semi-opaque
glass. The letters cast a
legible shadow of the words onto the floor of the lobby at key times of the
day - a nod to the virtual roots of this list
of words.
